Cupra Terramar – ‘A Blend of Emotion, Coolness and Sportiness with Electrification’

Unleashing Power with Purpose. The all-new Cupra Terramar is more than just an SUV... It’s a journey that stirs the soul.

Cupra are making a bold statement with their new sports-inspired SUV, the Cupra Terramar. Described as a ‘blend of emotion, coolness and sportiness with electrification’ by Wayne Griffiths, Cupra’s CEO, the Terramar looks to be an exciting addition into Cupra’s catalogue late in 2024 leading into 2025.

The name ‘Terramar’ derives from Terramar, Sitges (Spain), where the CUPRA brand embarked on its journey nearly five years ago, also pulling from the ‘Autódromo de Sitges-Terramar’, the former racing circuit which alludes to the sporty characteristics Cupra’s latest passion project is dying to show off. Looking at Cupra’s website page on the Terramar, and hearing how the CEO talks about it, it is clear that driving experience and emotional expression is at the forefront of the design. No doubt the Terramar will be a blast to drive, setting itself apart from others in the compact SUV category. As an enthusiast myself, I must admit, I am curious as to what it will feel like behind the wheel.

Let’s take a look at the Terramar’s design, because the design is captivating. Yes, it is a compact SUV, which is nothing new for the modern market, but Cupra are using this entry to do something different, and it shows, while still being recognisably Cupra. A long bonnet leads into a shark-nose inspired front end, with Cupra’s signature three-point headlights flanking the bold grille, completing an intimidating yet sleek look.

The linework from the wheel arches flow along the side profile, connecting to the skirts and smoothly leading into the rear bumper. The rear diffuser complements the sporty and ambitious nature of the Terramar while balancing the proportions. A full-width LED taillight strip emphasizes its wide stance, with triangulated lights on either side and the Cupra logo integrated into the design adding a hint of elegance.

There are 8 colour options listed on the configurator along with 8 wheel options in 3 sizes (20”, 19” and 18”) and 3 interior options. All of the colours look sophisticated and slick, and pair nicely with the bronze/copper or alloy wheels. Speaking of bronze, the Cupra Terramar employs the bronze badging and interior trimming that has become synonymous with Cupra’s branding, and I must say that it works here. I spent some time on the configurator, and it is impossible to make an ugly car.

The interior trims that have been revealed to us all exude quality and style. Featuring options of dark purple leather seats in the ‘High Canyon’ option, contrasting grey and black dinamica seats in the ‘Moon Light’ option and a dark navy blue bucket seat option in the ‘Deep Ocean’ spec. The Terramar features a driver-centric cabin, with the infotainment system, 10.25-inch digital cockpit and main air vents being angled towards the driver. The design is sleek and sporty, combining smooth lines and sharp angles, finished in high-quality plastics. The bronze trim and logo on the steering wheel contrast nicely in the mostly dark cabin, and the added touch of ambiance mood lighting is an appreciated one. You can also enjoy natural light with the Panorama Electric Sunroof, creating a spacious atmosphere.

The boot space measures at a substantial 540-630 litres, the greater of which is achievable with the adjustable second row. However, you can expect less space with the hybrid powertrain due to the need to accommodate the hybrid battery pack, meaning the hybrid version of the Terramar comes with 400-490 litres of boot space, although the Terramar has a low load lip which may sweeten the deal with accessibility. Both versions of the Terramar come with convenient storage options around the cabin, with many compartments to take advantage of, along with a place to leave your keys in the centre console. For your convenience, the Terramar features a wireless phone charger and multiple USB-C ports.

Notable features of the Terramar include adaptive cruise control, an advanced alarm system, electric tailgate and virtual pedal. The Terramar is also equipped with all the latest driving, parking and travel assists along with a top view camera. A sound system by Sennheiser Mobilty provides an immersive and encompassing listening experience through 12 high-fidelity speakers. AMBEO Concerto Software delivers high quality sound around the car with 390-watts.

The Terramar will be released in both hybrid and petrol variants, equipped with a DSG dual-shift gearbox across all options. The hybrid category is split into mild and plug-in hybrid, the plug-in option being compatible with fast charging up to 50kW DC.

The mild-hybrid engine is set to be a 1.5l eTSI four-cylinder petrol engine with a mild-hybrid module. The mild-hybrid system is composed of a small lithium-ion battery pack and a starter-generator, running on a 48V electrical system. The hybrid system will deliver small amounts of torque at low revs and will also enable engine-off coasting. This option delivers 148bhp and is FWD.

Two plug-in hybrid models will feature in the range, with 200bhp and 268bhp, featuring a 1.5l four-cylinder engine partnered by an electric motor and 19.4kWh battery pack. Cupra is proudly claiming that the plug-in engine allows for up to 70 miles of electric only range. The downside to the impressive range is the large battery that is required, meaning handling may suffer compared to the pure petrol models due to the additional weight.

Finally, we have the pure petrol model, which was a pleasant surprise to learn about. The petrol models make use of a 2.0l turbocharged four-cylinder, updated to comply with the expanding emissions regulations. There will be two power options available, offering 200bhp or 262bhp. The petrol models are AWD, and offer great balance and stability. Cupra themselves said that driving the Terramar is an emotive and dynamic experience, and I imagine they may be right.

If Cupra can live up to the expectations they have built with their campaign for the Terramar, I expect the reception will be overwhelmingly positive. A practical car that’s stylish and fun to drive, who wouldn’t want to have a go?

If you are interested in the Cupra Terramar, then keep an eye on this space as we intend to offer incredible deals when it hits the UK roads early in 2025!
