Your Guide to EV Charging Stations
Are you planning on leasing an electric vehicle, stepping into the world of EVs and wondering how charging your vehicle away from home works? Well, we’re here to help clear things up, and honestly, it’s not something you need to worry about – it’s a lot simpler than it may seem.
The process of charging your vehicle is straightforward. Park up next to the charger and open your charging port on your vehicle. You will then need to find the plug at the charger that fits your vehicle’s port, and some may require you to bring your own cable. Then you just plug it in, just like charging a phone! Once you’re done, you will pay at the charger, following the instructions provided.
Public charging stations can be catagorised into Destination and Rapid Charging stations. Let’s talk about each one and what you can expect after leasing your first EV!
Destination Charging Stations
Destination Charging stations are found in a variety of locations at which you would be spending a longer amount of time, such as at shopping centre car parks. This allows the driver to charge their car as they are busy doing other things.
Due to the expectation of the driver exiting their vehicle and spending time elsewhere, these chargers often charge at slower speeds, with a typical charging output of between 7kW and 22kW, which will add roughly 30 – 55 miles to your car in an hour. These numbers will vary based on the charger and your vehicle.
Rapid Charging Stations
Rapid Charging stations, also known as 'on-the-road chargers' can be found at motorway service stations or other major roads, along with many petrol station forecourts that have begun to add EV charging stations as well.
The hint is in the name with rapid charging stations, they are not designed for the driver to leave their car charging whilst they get on with other things. Therefore, rapid charging stations are more powerful and charge much faster than destination chargers, with charging outputs ranging between 50kW to 350kW! Charging points that deliver 100kW or higher tend to be referred to as ultra-rapid chargers. A typical charge lasts around 20 minutes.
